It is one of the most common types of injuries related to car accidents. Whiplash is simply the strain and stress put on your muscles when your head is jerked forward and back during the impact of a collision. It may be very common, but it is also misunderstood. There are two levels of injuries which usually occur during an accident. The first level accounts for the majority of whiplash injuries. On this first level, about 80-85% of the injuries resolve within two to six months post accident date. The injuries are usually muscle sprain/strains that respond well to treatment such as medicine and chiropractic care.
The second level accounts for 15-20% of the whiplash injuries. These injuries develop into chronic pain lasting for years. These injuries usually occur in the joint facets and discs. They do not respond well to conservative whiplash treatment. For example, they may need more aggressive therapy, joint injections, or even surgery to produce relief for the injured person. Remember, it is very difficult to determine which level of whiplash one has from the initial doctor’s visit. Therefore, your treating healthcare provider must be able and willing to move quickly to more aggressive measures if conservative treatment is futile.
Fortunately, modern treatment of whiplash injuries as progressed with a better understanding of the injury. For many decades, the standard treatment for whiplash injuries was rest and limited motion for a couple weeks. Then, there would be a gradual slide into self mobilization. Modern revelations show that active intervention care within 96 hours of the accident produces better long term results. Active chiropractic care is considered a better treatment for whiplash injuries than medical care. Therefore the best recommendation is to get into a chiropractor as soon as possible for any whiplash symptoms in order to achieve the best results.
